The Journey of Mother Tongue: A History of Canberra Tamil School

The story of the Canberra Tamil School is not merely a record of dates and addresses; it is a living tapestry woven with the threads of heritage, the resilience of a community, and a deep-seated love for the “Classical Language.”

The Humble Seed (1991)

In the quiet autumn of 1991, a small seed was planted by Canberra Tamil Association (CTA) in the heart of Australia’s capital. With just 14 eager students and 5 visionary teachers, the school drew its first breath. In those early days, the air was filled with the rhythmic chanting of Uyir and Mei letters, echoing within the walls of what is now the Kambah Medical Centre.

Before the formal structures of today existed, the school was nurtured by the dedicated hands of Mr. Kanagasabhai, who managed the administration with a singular focus: ensuring that the melody of Tamil would never fade from the voices of the next generation.

Growth and the Spirit of Community

As the seasons turned, the seed sprouted. The growing number of students soon outpaced the small rooms in Kambah, leading to a move to Erindale College.

This era birthed a beautiful tradition of community. While children mastered their grammar inside the classrooms, a different kind of energy took hold nearby. Parents, waiting for their children, gathered at the Erindale Active Leisure Centre, where the flutter of shuttlecocks in badminton matches became the backdrop to lifelong friendships. Education was the mission, but community was the heartbeat.

Formalising the Vision (1996)

By 1996, the school had matured into a cornerstone of the community. Recognizing its vital role, the Canberra Tamil Association extended its constitution. The association officially formalised the school’s inclusion under its umbrella, and a dedicated committee was formed. This move provided the structural foundation upon which the school’s future would be built.

Crossing the Lake: The Northern Expansion

The song of the Tamil language soon drifted across the lake to the North of Canberra. To meet the needs of a growing population, a second campus was established at the Dickson Library.

Like a river finding its path, the North campus flowed through various homes – moving to Nichols Primary School and then to Palmerston Primary School – as more families sought to gift their children the treasure of their mother tongue.

The Modern Era: Two Pillars of Excellence

Today, the Canberra Tamil School stands as a towering testament to the dedication of the diaspora. It has blossomed from those initial 14 students into a vibrant institution of over 150 students, guided by the wisdom and passion of more than 30 volunteer teachers.

The school now operates across two grand pillars:

South Campus: Hosted at Melrose High School.
North Campus: Hosted at Harrison Public School.

கான்பெரா தமிழ்ப் பாடசாலையின் வரலாறு என்பது வெறும் திகதிகளோ அல்லது இடங்களோ சார்ந்த பதிவு மட்டுமல்ல; அது ஒரு சமூகத்தின் விடாமுயற்சி, பாரம்பரியத்தின் மீதான பற்று மற்றும் “செம்மொழி” மீதான தீராத காதல் ஆகியவற்றால் நெய்யப்பட்ட ஒரு வாழும் காவியம்.

முறையான நிர்வாகக் குழுக்கள் அமைவதற்கு முன்னரே, திரு. கனகசபை அவர்கள் இப்பாடசாலையின் நிர்வாகத்தை ஒரு தவமாக ஏற்று நடத்தினார். அடுத்த தலைமுறையின் குரலில் தமிழ் மொழியின் ராகம் என்றும் குறையக்கூடாது என்ற ஒற்றை இலட்சியத்துடன் அவர் இப்பாடசாலையை வழிநடத்தினார்.

வளர்ச்சியும் சமூக உணர்வும்

காலங்கள் உருண்டோடின; அந்தச் சிறு விதை துளிர்விட்டது. மாணவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை பெருகவே, கம்பாவின் சிறிய அறைகள் போதவில்லை. இதனால் பாடசாலை எரிண்டேல் கல்லூரிக்கு (Erindale College) மாற்றப்பட்டது.

1996-ஆம் ஆண்டிற்குள், இப்பாடசாலை சமூகத்தின் ஒரு தவிர்க்க முடியாத அங்கமாக வளர்ந்தது. இதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை உணர்ந்த கான்பெரா தமிழ் சங்கம், தனது யாப்பை விரிவுபடுத்தி, தமிழ்ப் பாடசாலைக்கு முறையான அங்கிகாரத்தை வழங்கியது. அத்தோடு, பாடசாலையை வழிநடத்த ஒரு தனித்துவமான பாடசாலைக் குழுவையும் உருவாக்கியது. இந்த அதிகாரப்பூர்வ அங்கிகாரம், பாடசாலையின் எதிர்கால வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஒரு வலுவான அடித்தளத்தை வழங்கியது.

ஏரியைக் கடந்து: வடக்குப் பகுதி விரிவாக்கம்

தமிழ் மொழியின் கீதம் விரைவில் கான்பெராவின் ஏரியைக் கடந்து வடக்குப் பகுதிக்கும் பரவியது. வளர்ந்து வரும் தேவையைப் பூர்த்தி செய்ய, டிக்சன் நூலகத்தில் (Dickson Library) வடக்குப் பகுதிக்கான ஒரு கிளை தொடங்கப்பட்டது.

ஒரு நதி தன் பாதையைக் கண்டறிந்து பாய்வது போல, மாணவர் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரிக்க அதிகரிக்க, இந்த வடக்குப் பிரிவு நிக்கோல்ஸ் ஆரம்பப் பாடசாலை, பின்னர் பாமர்ஸ்டன் ஆரம்பப் பாடசாலை எனப் பல இடங்களைக் கடந்து வளர்ந்தது.

இன்று, கான்பெரா தமிழ்ப் பாடசாலை புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்களின் அர்ப்பணிப்பிற்கு ஒரு சான்றாக நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கிறது. தொடக்கத்தில் இருந்த 14 மாணவர்களிலிருந்து, இன்று 150-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் மற்றும் 30-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட தன்னார்வ ஆசிரியர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதலோடு ஒரு மாபெரும் நிறுவனமாக மலர்ந்துள்ளது.

தற்போது இப்பாடசாலை இரு பெரும் தூண்களாகச் செயல்படுகிறது:

தெற்கு வளாகம்: மெல்ரோஸ் உயர்நிலைப் பாடசாலை (Melrose High School).
வடக்கு வளாகம்: ஹாரிசன் பொதுப் பாடசாலை (Harrison Public School).

“தமிழ் கற்பது என்பது ஒரு பழமையான நாகரிகத்தின் ஆன்மாவைத் தொடுவதாகும்; அதே நேரத்தில் நவீன உலகில் உறுதியாகத் தடம் பதிப்பதுமாகும்.”

ஒரு சிறிய மருத்துவக் கட்டிடத்தில் தொடங்கி, இன்று இரு பெரும் வளாகங்களில் இயங்கும் கான்பெரா தமிழ்ப் பாடசாலையின் பயணம், கற்பிக்க உள்ளங்களும் கற்க மாணவர்களும் இருக்கும் வரை நமது பாரம்பரியம் என்றும் அழியாது என்பதை உணர்த்துகிறது.
